General Information

The Armagh Planetarium popularises not only astronomy but also general scientific and technological knowledge for all levels of society. Our aim is to demonstrate to our visitors the amazing objects that exist beyond our planet. Opened in 1968,Armagh Planetarium has been regularly up-dated with the latest technology, often developed in Armagh, to ensure our visitors enjoy a superb experience and scientifically accurate views of the Universe.

The Digital Theatre can accommodate 94 visitors in air-conditioned comfort. An impressive stereo sound system and advanced LED lighting suite enhance the audience’s enjoyment of our programme of stunning star shows.Armagh Planetarium is the only site in Ireland where visitors can experience the fantastic Digistar5 360 degree immersive projection system which can take you to other worlds. The marvellous Digistar 5 is directly descended from Armagh’s first experiments with video in the 1970s so we have come full-circle.

The Planetarium features extensive exhibits highlighting the exploration of space and how this is helping us better understand our place in the cosmos.

During school holidays rocket launching is a firm favourite at the Planetarium. The rocket building activity is an exciting and unique way to introduce children to the scientific principles of forces and motion.

Armagh Observatory & Planetarium is core-funded by the NI Executive through the Department for Communities.
